MYOPIA CONTROL WHAT IS MYOPIA?
WHAT IS MYOPIA?
Myopia is the gradual lengthening of the eyeball that happens naturally as you age, particularly from your birth to your teens. Myopia, also known as nearsightedness, is when the eyeball lengthens beyond a normal size and impacts your vision, causing you to need glasses or contacts. This is one of most common vision problems in the U.S, affecting around 30% of teens and 90% of the Asian population.
THE IMPORTANCE OF CONTROLLING MYOPIA
Myopia control is primarily for children and teens, as those are the ages when the eyeball lengthens the most. It focuses on preventing the child’s prescription from growing too quickly, because a high degree of myopia increases the likelihood of eye diseases like macular degeneration, glaucoma, and retinal detachment, later in life.
The ideal outcome for myopia control is that the child’s prescription remains the same until they are in their 20s and the eyeball stops lengthening. Thus, reducing their risk of developing eye diseases later in life, in addition to maintaining a lower prescription and better vision.
MYOPIA CONTROL AND ORTHO-K
At Golden Vision, we specialize in myopia control using Ortho-K lenses that are specially made to be worn overnight. While wearing the lenses when sleeping, they reshape the cornea to correct vision and control the progression of myopia. As a result, children are not only able to see without the need for glasses or contacts during the day, but also have prevented their prescription from increasing quickly. This effective myopia control helps maintain a more stable prescription so that later in life, the child will not be at as high of a risk for eye diseases like glaucoma, macular degeneration, and retinal detachment.
I highly recommend Golden Vision, my family comes here whenever we need a pair of glasses or eyes exam. Great service and great people.Wendy
OTHER TREATMENT OPTIONS
FOR MYOPIA CONTROL
Golden Vision also offers alternative treatment options for myopia control that can be used in place of or alongside Ortho-K lenses.
One of our most effective myopia control treatments is atropine drops. These are special eye drops that slow down the progression of myopia and are especially effective on high prescriptions. The combination of atropine drops and Ortho-K can be 100% effective in preventing an increase in prescription.
Our other treatment option that is almost always used in conjunction with atropine drops or Ortho-K lenses is myopia education to naturally slow down the progression of myopia. Our Myopia Education program teaches children how to keep their eyes healthy with eye relaxation techniques and visual hygiene. They learn day-to-day eye habits to practice that will help control their rate of myopia.
WHAT ABOUT LASIK
SURGERY AS AN ALTERNATIVE?
Children and teens are not eligible for LASIK surgery, so they will need more common vision correction methods such as contact lenses, glasses, or Ortho-K. For adults with myopia, LASIK is a way to regain clear vision. However, LASIK does not reduce your risk for eye diseases such as glaucoma, retinal detachment, and macular degeneration, as it does not address the length of the eyeball. Your risk will be the same as it was before LASIK. Myopia control is important for children and teens because it affects the lengthening of the eyeball which is one of the key causes of these eye diseases.
